Did you know that the next Edmonton Public School’s PD Day is on Lunar New Year? Each Year is represented one of the twelve animals of the Chinese Zodiac and January 29th will mark the beginning of the Year of the Snake and the Alberta Aviation Museum is celebrating with a special edition of our History Hunters day camp!
Our History Hunters camp is both engaging and educational, as campers embark on a journey through time to uncover the true stories from Alberta’s aviation history. We’ll learn about the past through interactive games and activities, but this camp will have a special twist – every story we learn about happened in the Year of the Snake! Campers will put their observation skills to the test with our brand new “Say What You See” game, learning about events from past years of the Snake including 1929, 1941,1953, 1965, 1977, 1989, 2001, and 2013.
People born in the Year of the Snake are known for their intelligence, intuition, and resourcefulness—traits that will prove invaluable during this adventure at camp. The late 1920s were a busy time for aviation in Alberta and campers will travel back to 1929 to explore the incredible Mercy Flight by Wop May and Vic Horner, their Snake-like ability to think critically and stay calm under pressure will help them navigate the scavenger hunt, piecing together clues to uncover the full story of this life-saving mission. Just like a Snake, campers will use their sharp observation skills to follow the trail and solve mysteries around the museum.
In 1941, as the De Havilland Aircraft Company faced shortages of aluminum and steel while building the innovative wooden Mosquito, campers will also need to tap into their creative thinking. Drawing on their ingenuity and problem-solving abilities, campers will face the challenge of designing aircraft models using unconventional materials, proving that when faced with limitations, the Snake’s ability to adapt and innovate leads to success.
Of course, we’ll be bringing back all the classic Alberta Aviation Museum day camp favourites! Campers will take a seat in the cockpit of a historic aircraft and have the chance to visit the museum’s RedBird Simulator Lab. Whether it’s making precise maneuvers or adapting to unexpected obstacles, campers’ Snake-like focus and quick thinking will help them soar to new heights!
Campers of all Zodiac signs are sure to love this adventure, but this special twist on our History Hunters camp will only be available for one day, so book your camper’s spot today!
