PROGRAM DETAILS
All grade 5 field trips cover concepts under the organizing idea – Energy: Understandings of the physical world are deepened by investigating matter and energy, focusing on how forces affect objects in air.
- Thrust and drag are opposing forces.
- Lift and weight are opposing forces.
- Thrust is a force that can act in the direction of movement.
- Drag is a force that can act in opposition to the direction of movement.
- Lift is an upward force that acts to overcome the weight of a living thing or an object and hold it in the air.
- Weight is a force that is caused by gravity and that acts on a living thing or an object in a downward direction.
- Forces can affect the flight of living things and objects in various ways, including
- speed
- horizontal and vertical movement
- altitude
- straight and level flight
We offer a variety of formats and lengths of programs to accommodate different class sizes. All program formats cover the above curriculum links and include use of the museum’s flight simulators to test out how forces in the air impact aircraft movement.
Some programs go more in depth and cover additional material for a full descriptions as well as pricing, schedules, and maximum number of students see drop down menu.

PROGRAM OPTIONS
$530 per class / Maximum 32 Students (additional students cannot be added)
9:15am-2:15pm
Theory of Flight is our most in-depth look at forces of flight and includes a mix of classroom and tour-based learning. This program includes supplementary detail on curriculum points (Properties of fluids and buoyant force) and goes into detail about how pilots use forces to control aircraft. This program includes the museum’s flight simulators and a history tour exploring aviation’s role in shaping our community.
$315 per class / Maximum 32 Students (additional students cannot be added)
9:15am-11:45am or 12:00pm-2:30pm
The half-day Theory of Flight program follows the the same mix of classroom and tour-based learning as the full day to allow for a detailed look at the four forces of flight it includes discussion of the properties of fluids and buoyant force but does not include aircraft controls or a history tour. The Half-Day program includes flight simulators.
$750 per group / Includes up 54 students (additional students can be added for $14.50/ student to a maximum of 64 students)
10:00am – 2:00pm (timing can be adjusted for school schedules)
The Full Day Tour includes four 45-minute activity blocks (in groups of up to 16 students) moving through each activity: Science Tour (focused on the four forces of flight), a history tour of aviation’s role in Edmonton, flight simulators, and self-guided exploration.
$450 per group/ includes up to 32 students (additional students can be added for $12.00/ student to a maximum of 48 students)
Approximately 90 minutes (flexible start times)
The Half Day Tour includes two 45-minute activities blocks (in groups of up to 16 students) moving through each activity: Science Tour (focused on the four forces of flight) and flight simulator.
If additional students are added, more time may be required to ensure all students have an opportunity to use the flight simulators (an additional activity will be added – your choice of a history tour on aviation’s role in Edmonton OR self-guided exploration).
