As summer ends, we would like to take a moment to look back and celebrate the many activities and events that made this such a busy and exciting season at the Alberta Aviation Museum. From community events and family programming to aviation-focused activities, it was wonderful to see so many members, volunteers, families, and visitors enjoying the museum and supporting our mission to preserve and share Alberta’s aviation history.
Our “Props N Hops” event brought aviation enthusiasts and the community together for an enjoyable camp themed evening at the museum. Guests had the opportunity to enjoy the unique atmosphere of the museum, connect with others, and experience our museum in a different way. Events like Props N Hops are a great opportunity to introduce new people to the museum while bringing our aviation community together.
Our ‘Summer Camps’ provided young aviation enthusiasts with an exciting opportunity to learn, explore, and have fun at the museum. Campers were able to discover aviation history, explore aircraft, participate in hands-on activities, and learn more about the world of aviation. We were delighted to see the enthusiasm and curiosity of the next generation of aviation enthusiasts.
The museum was also pleased to participate in ‘Historic Doors Open’, welcoming visitors who wanted to discover more about the history and heritage preserved within our facility. The event provided a wonderful opportunity to showcase our aircraft, exhibits, and the important stories connected to Alberta’s aviation history.
Throughout the summer, visitors continued to enjoy our aircraft collection, exhibits, and museum tours. Volunteers shared their knowledge and stories, helping bring the history of aviation to life for visitors of all ages. These visits helped us reach old and new audiences and provided opportunities for people of all ages to discover the fascinating world of aviation.
We would like to extend a special thank-you to all of our members, and volunteers who helped make these activities possible. Whether you volunteered at an event, helped with a summer camp, worked on an aircraft, welcomed visitors, gave tours, or supported the museum in other ways, your contribution made a difference. Our summer activities would not be possible without the time, enthusiasm, and dedication of our museum community.
As we move into the fall, we look forward to continuing the momentum from a successful summer and work towards the final steps in becoming the owners of Hangar 14. With one final remaining condition before the transfer of ownership, is the completion of the Amendment and Assignment Agreement, which outlines the museum’s long-term heritage rehabilitation plan. It focuses on planning future heritage rehabilitation work, including roof truss stabilization, exterior painting, repairs to hangar doors, and other preservation projects. The program requires all approved projects to be completed within a five-year period. The Board agreed that the rehabilitation plan should focus on realistic, lower-cost projects that are achievable within the required timeframe, while continuing to seek clarification from the City regarding structural repair requirements. Roof truss stabilization remains the highest infrastructure priority.
The transfer of ownership of Hangar 14 from the City of Edmonton to the Alberta Aviation Museum Association is scheduled for October 2, 2026, once all conditions of the sale agreement have been satisfied.
With a ton of hard work ahead the museum has rolled up its sleeves and is ready to get to it. Also with the wonderful support that we have received from members and the community we know we can achieve sustainability, in our home.
Once again, thank you for your continued support!
