Getting Ready for Flight School

Three children excited about winning a game yelling and cheering Getting Ready for Flight School Summer Camp: What You Need to Know!

Let me guess: your mom just came into your room and told you she signed you up for Flight School Summer Camp and now you are FREAKING OUT! What should you expect? How should you prepare for the big week?

Hi, my name is Erin, and I’m a Program Facilitator here at the Alberta Aviation Museum, and I’ll be helping out with Flight School this summer! I know how nerve-wracking your first, (or even tenth!) summer camp can be, I’ve been there! Don’t worry though, I’m here to tell you not only what to expect but also how to prepare.

What to Expect:

On the first day, after you’re dropped off in the morning, we will start by just getting to know your guides, as well as your fellow pilots (who will become some awesome new friends!) If meeting new people scares you, that’s ok! Everyone is in the same boat (or plane, in our case). This is why we’ll start the day off with a fun icebreaker activity.

Throughout the week, we’ll participate in some games, crafts, and activities. These will not only teach you a little bit about flight and a

viation, but will also be a ton of fun!

At the end of each day, you will get to do three more activities in smaller groups:

  1.  Flight Simulators: Try flying a plane in our Flight Simulator Lab with controls similar to that of those in an aircraft!
  2. Open Cockpit: Check out the inside of one of our airplanes and sit where the pilot sits!
  3.  Another fun game, craft, or activity: A different activity each day so you definitely won’t want to miss out!
  4. Then we say goodbye until we meet again, whether that’s the next day or next summer! We are always so excited to see you again!

Now that you know what to expect, let’s talk about what you should do to prepare!

Preparing for summer camp is exciting! In fact, I’m sure you’ll be so excited, you won’t even be sure what to bring (or you’ll be like me and FORGET to pack until the morning of). So below, I present to you “Erin’s Fantastical Guide for Preparing for Flight School” (great title, I know)!

Erin’s Fantastical Guide for Preparing for Flight School

1.) Bring water! We’ll be spending some time outside, as well, the hangar can be quite hot so it’s important that we stay hydrated!

2.) Dress for the weather! Rain or shine, Flight School runs. Wear what’s comfortable for you and won’t be too hot or too cold.

3) Get a good night’s sleep the night before! We know it’s exciting, but we also know that we will be having so much fun all day and we want to make sure we have all the energy possible.

4) Pack a lunch and some snacks! It’s important that we eat so we can have energy throughout the day.

5) Bring your thinking caps! It will be so much fun, but you’ll also get the chance to learn about aviation.

6) Bring a positive attitude! Remember that we’re all here to have fun!

Flight School is all about learning about aviation and having a good time! As long as you come with a positive attitude, ready to learn and play, you’ll have an amazing experience, I promise. I’m sure next summer, you’ll be asking your mom to sign you up again!
