School Program Round-Up
Theory of Flight, a grade 6 science program, has been the cornerstone of the Alberta Aviation Museum School Programs for nearly three decades. In recent years, we’ve not only seen growth in our school programming, but we have also started to see shifts in the types of experiences schools are looking for. More and more schools are choosing the flexibility of tours over a full-day program and we have seen an increasing number of grade levels other than grade 6 visiting. And even more, change is coming, with updates to the Alberta Curriculum, Theory of Flight will be becoming a grade 5 program. We are also working to expand our school programs with field trip options for more grade levels and subject areas.
But before we look forward to changes in the fall, we have just wrapped up another busy school year! Here are some of the highlights from the 2023/2024:
- In the 2023/2024 over 3000 students attended field trips to the museum (up from around 2200 in the 2022/2023 school year).
- Of the schools that visited 44%, have not visited the museum (in the last 6 years).
- Most schools visited from within Edmonton, but 15% of schools visited from outside city limits.
- Approximately, 2990 students crashed on the flight simulators, some of whom said the biggest learning from their field trip was that “flying a plane is hard”.
We would like to express our gratitude to our educators this year for inspiring students' enthusiasm for aviation and for facilitating their visits to the museum.
